GERDA VAAS
As children, we all loved playing at being adults—playing house, making sand pies, running a shop with leaf currency, hosting tea parties, building forts. These games sparked pure curiosity, a warm sense of rightness and success. Unfortunately, in the "adult world," as the levels of the game become more complex, these feelings fade, dissolving into boredom, fears, insecurities, expectations, and what we call "problems."
In the Scenes series, the artist invites us to recall the sensations of play—the anticipation of actions and their sequence, the magic of objects, the determination to act—and to replace "problems" with "challenges." Each scene is a fragment of our childhood mythology.

Gerda sculpts the Observers (our inner children) from polymer clay, creates a miniature scene, then places it in the right environment and photographs it. This process evokes yet another childhood sensation—the ability to focus intensely on a small space and imagine oneself inside it.

First, this is a greeting from autumn.
Second, it’s a tea party—the joy of creating an imagined everyday scene that is, in fact, magical.
Third, it’s an experiment with scale and its invariance!
Everyone is invited!
